Did you know the sky is blue? Obvious and less-obvious in ICT4D conversations

November 14, 2009

I have a confession to make. I’m not a development worker. I work with ICTs in the developing world, but I am driven by profit. This is both a luxury and a burden. It’s cool that people think I have something to say about ICT4D. I don’t. I have a lot to say about ICTs… Read More Did you know the sky is blue? Obvious and less-obvious in ICT4D conversations

In which Theresa is anti-authenticity.

December 5, 2008

I don’t get the hate. If you’ve never been to “Africa” (don’t forget to refer to the continent, never a specific country), you may never have encountered the volunteer pecking order that serves little more purpose than reinforcing guilt and perpetuating stereotypes. Graham North works on the island of Zanzibar, and his disgust for volunteers… Read More In which Theresa is anti-authenticity.

On Twitter and the Cool Table

November 26, 2008

I’m new to Twitter. And by “new,” I mean that I’ve been playing with the service for a few months, but only recently started actually having conversations. I have a feeling that a great deal of my followers only followed me because I followed them. A few days ago, I had a brief conversation with… Read More On Twitter and the Cool Table

Hi, my name is Theresa.

I am a logistician, traveler, writer, paper crafter, DIY-er, cocktail crafter, and an occasionally doting mother. I am foul-mouthed, not nearly as diplomatic as my profession might imply, and fiercely feminist.

Necessary disclaimers

The opinions expressed here on SVO are my own and do not reflect the opinions of the Department of State or the USG.

While I occasionally link to services and products I like, I receive no remuneration, financial or otherwise, for doing so.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a Joyous New Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a Joyous New Year!
I had chocolate covered pecan stuffed dates for th I had chocolate covered pecan stuffed dates for the first time at a USG sponsored handicrafts fair in East Jerusalem. They were outrageously expensive, and worth every bit of it. I was determined to figure out how to make them myself. I think most Foreign Service families pick up bits and pieces of traditions in the places we live and serve—and these dates have become part of my own Christmas tradition.

They are easy to make — pit the Medjool dates, insert toasted nuts (I prefer pecans, but almonds and walnuts also work well), and dip in tempered chocolate. I decorate with white chocolate because it hides any flaws in my chocolate. ;).
#
As always, the quality of your ingredients matters — get good chocolate and medjool dates, and toast the nuts yourself.

No, this is not a Pyrex ad, and no, I have not mad No, this is not a Pyrex ad, and no, I have not made it big enough to get paid for posting on IG. Alas. This is the lamentable result of having our household split between Arlington and Malabo—not enough mugs to make the first hot chocolate of the season with. 😅

I am going to admit to loving the 4th. I know that doing so calls into question my leftist credentials, but I love it for the same reason I love New Year’s and Easter and birthdays. They’re each an opportunity for renewal, for reflection, and to recommit to forging ahead towards a better, more just world. There’s a lot of work to do, and today, at least, I am optimistic that my country has the will to do it.
