On new beginnings, but not quite the new year (yet)

December 26, 2019

A dear friend told me today that she wants more routine in her life, and in particular, a calming evening ritual of tea and a book before bed. There’s something magic about curling up with hot tea and an engrossing story at the end of a long and frustrating day. Or a long and frustrating… Read More On new beginnings, but not quite the new year (yet)

Pico Basilé – Bioko Island’s Biggest Volcano

July 28, 2018

I recently dragged Bertrand and the kids up Pico Basilé, the imposing volcano that sits behind Malabo. As the volcano hasn’t erupted since 1932, we surmised that it would be utterly safe to visit the national park on top of the mountain. On our way up the winding and narrow road, we stopped at a… Read More Pico Basilé – Bioko Island’s Biggest Volcano

First Impressions of Malabo

February 19, 2018
Bertrand relaxing in his hammock at Sipopo Beach, Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea

We made it to Malabo. Finally. After leaving Jerusalem in February of 2017, it felt like we’d never get here. Malabo is complex. Equatorial Guinea is complex. To set the scene for blogging over the next few years, I will not publicly grapple with colonial legacies and living here as a wealthy white woman married… Read More First Impressions of Malabo

Hi, my name is Theresa.

I am a logistician, traveler, writer, paper crafter, DIY-er, cocktail crafter, and an occasionally doting mother. I am foul-mouthed, not nearly as diplomatic as my profession might imply, and fiercely feminist.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a Joyous New Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a Joyous New Year!
I had chocolate covered pecan stuffed dates for th I had chocolate covered pecan stuffed dates for the first time at a USG sponsored handicrafts fair in East Jerusalem. They were outrageously expensive, and worth every bit of it. I was determined to figure out how to make them myself. I think most Foreign Service families pick up bits and pieces of traditions in the places we live and serve—and these dates have become part of my own Christmas tradition.

They are easy to make — pit the Medjool dates, insert toasted nuts (I prefer pecans, but almonds and walnuts also work well), and dip in tempered chocolate. I decorate with white chocolate because it hides any flaws in my chocolate. ;).
#
As always, the quality of your ingredients matters — get good chocolate and medjool dates, and toast the nuts yourself.

No, this is not a Pyrex ad, and no, I have not mad No, this is not a Pyrex ad, and no, I have not made it big enough to get paid for posting on IG. Alas. This is the lamentable result of having our household split between Arlington and Malabo—not enough mugs to make the first hot chocolate of the season with. 😅

I am going to admit to loving the 4th. I know that doing so calls into question my leftist credentials, but I love it for the same reason I love New Year’s and Easter and birthdays. They’re each an opportunity for renewal, for reflection, and to recommit to forging ahead towards a better, more just world. There’s a lot of work to do, and today, at least, I am optimistic that my country has the will to do it.
