This weekend very long, very fun, and not nearly as productive as it needed to be. Between Halloween parties, lending a helping hand to friends, and crappy weather, I haven’t been able to get a damn thing done. It may be a late night.
I started out the day as days should start out. With delicious overnight oats. I first read about them on Kath’s blog. When I go home next month, I’m going to try them with soy and almond milk to see if it’s better than skim. Also, yogurt! Good inexpensive yogurt is hard to find in Benin, and I’ve been slacking off on making my own lately.
Next up, a delicious homemade pumpkin latte.
I didn’t get any pictures of lunch because I forgot that I had my camera in my pocketbook. GRAR! We met some friends at a beautiful beachside restaurant called the Beer Garden (Nauer Bieregarten? Whatever, everything in Cotonou gets an English name). I had a Croque Madame with green beans. Next time, I’ll just get the burger and fries so I don’t have to spend the whole meal stealing bites off of Bertrand’s plate.
We stopped at the port’s fish market on the way home. I wanted shrimp! The ladies there will shell and clean it for you, so I didn’t even have to devein it. Believe it not, this started out as a whole kilo of shrimp.
As soon as we got home, I threw some water on the stove to steam the little beasties.
What to do … what to do. We were starving despite our earlier pigout at the beach, so I threw together some sweet & sour shrimp.
Bertrand hates shrimp & hates sweet dishes for dinner, so I was surprised as hell that he loved this. There’s no recipe because I basically winged it. I’ll work on one next weekend, when I have some more free time to cook (and some more shrimp). Here’s a hint: the secret ingredient is ketchup!
You know it’s going to be a long night when I’m making iced coffee at 7pm.
Yes, those are iced coffee cubes. Diluted coffee is death!
My biggest disappointment of the weekend was that I didn’t find any time to walk. I took Saturday off as a rest day (and boy did I need it!), Sunday it rained, and today was busy busy busy. My breakfast for tomorrow is already sitting in the fridge (overnight oats, I love you so much), so hopefully I’ll get a couple of miles in before work.
Happy November, everyone!
